is what I found in a Web page about Armenian Wedding Traditions at
http://members.aol.com/wedding389/atraditn.htm
Apparently this is how the elderly and even the dead used to participate in the pre-wedding preparations on the groom's side: At the groom's house, wine carafes were opened in the presence of elderly relatives, and the pitchers brimmed over. The groom's father and a priest made a trip to the cemetery and prayed over the tombs of their ancestors. Then, the two men made rounds of the homes where relatives had died during the past year.I was surprised to see the cemetery become one of the scenes of such a festive occasion. What can you tell me about traditions and holidays as you know them and as your parents and grandparents lived them. You can work on one of the following themes or come up with a project of your own. A Did you know that "Sourp Sarkis" has some interesting traditions associated with it? Is it celebrated in homes within your community? What actually takes place during its celebration, and what else did people used to do traditionally?Inform me about the events and traditions of the "Sourp Sarkis" holiday and illustrate the meanings behind them. B A wedding, a baptism, a burial. Can you document one of those special events that are due to occur during the upcoming days in your area? What can you notice that is particularly Armenian about it? Show me what really goes on during a social event of this type in your community. C What can you find out about old Armenian traditions? Are there grandmothers, grandfathers, priests that you can ask? What have your parents told you about how Armenian holidays used to be? List some Armenian traditions, describing and illustrating them in a creative way. (Click on the Acquaintance icon to go back) |
