The
first booth of the Mashtots Avenue Festival is dedicated to
Mesrob Mashtots himself, who invented the Armenian alphabet, and
to the Avenue named after him. Here visitors will find
information on Saint Mashtots, the Mashtots Matenataran and
Mashtots Avenue.
1- We need pictures of Mashtots Avenue which can be
accessed online.
Task: Find a
photograph of the Avenue on the Internet and send us the URL of
the page where it is located as well as a copy of the photograph
itself as an email attachment.
2- We need
information about the Mashtots Matenataran. The UNESCO site at
http://firewall.unesco.org/webworld/
nominations/en/armenia/armenianom.htm refers to the
matenatran as "An Institute of Scientific Research on
Ancient Manuscripts . . . situated on one of the north-west
scenic hills of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. The collection
of approximatly 17,000 manuscripts includes almost every sphere
of Armenian ancient and medieval science and culture."
Task: Find other Web sites about the Matenataran.
Hint:
Go to a search engine such as HotBot,
and use both the Western Armenian spelling (Madenataran) and the
Eastern Armenian one (Matenatran.)
3- Here is part of a poem about
Mesrob Mashtots, written with the letters he created, and found
on the Internet in its English translation.
"Give me
light, God irrefutable,
Inexplicable architect of the universe,
Creator of fate and recognition,
Tempest of breath, central ability,
The deacon of your Holy Table Mesrob,
For his great foggy dream
Pleads for lucidity from your hands!
"
Task: We
would like you to find the title of the poem, it's author, the
name of the book from which it is taken, and the name of the
translator from Armenian to English.
Hint: Go to
Altavista and search for
a sentence from the poem enclosed in quotes.
4- Is "Mashtots" the
only way to spell this saint's name in English? We need your
help in deciding what spelling to use for the English
information brochures at the Mashtots booth.
Task: Find
the most popular way to spell "Mashtots" by searching
for different variations of the name on the Internet. Tell us
what search engine you used, and how many different pages were
found for each version.
Hint:
Try "mashtots", "mashdots",
"mashdotz" and "mashtotz"
(can you think of any other possiblities? What do you get when
you try variations like "machtots" with a "ch"
instead of the "sh"?) Tell us the number of pages
found in each case. Most search engines will tell you how many "hits"
were returned, so you don't have to count them yourself! You
might even want to try more than one search engine out of
curiosity.
